Live Performances and DJ Sets in Envelop Venues
Envelop is a nonprofit that amplifies the power of music through immersive listening experiences. Our immersive sound venues and free open source spatial audio tools, provide a space to deeply listen, relax and reset. We host a diversity of events ranging from spatial music performances and album listening events, to wellness and music production education. Envelop allows us to be inside the music.
Here you can learn more about Envelop venues and read audience testimonials.
There are generally three ways to share music within an Envelop venue:
1. Live Performance
2. DJ Set
3. Album or soundscape playback
The info below covers the basics of sharing a stereo DJ set and a live performance that uses Envelop’s free and open source software, Envelop for Live, to control the placement of sound. Album or soundscape playback would be the same setup as a live performance, without a live performer.
Completely immersive spatial mixes and compositions can be shared by artists using our free and open source software Envelop for Live (E4L) that works with Live 10 Suite. http://www.envelop.us/software
Envelop for Live
Using our free and open-source software Envelop for Live (E4L) you can position any sounds or layers in three-dimensional space.
Using Ableton Live Suite 10 you can place an E4L spatial panner on any track, or group of tracks (stems), easily spatializing that sound or layer.
At home or in your studio you can use E4L’s “binaural” mode to monitor the spatial mix on headphones. The mix you create can also be used for VR experiences, 360 video and more.
During soundcheck our engineers will send your encoded spatial mix from E4L into the Envelop system.
It sounds great simply taking a stereo mix and playing it back within an Envelop venue. All of the speakers on the left are the "left channel", the speakers on the right are the "right channel". Imagine listening and dancing with a bunch of people inside giant shared headphones.
Envelop can also provide a simple controller that allows DJs mixing in stereo to apply real-time spatial effects like 3D reverbs, multi-delays, spinning effects and more. This allows the DJ to focus on the music, and still be able to add some extra spatial dimension to the experience as they wish. The three-dimensional placement of the stereo feed can be controlled in real-time by the artist, a dedicated technician, creative automation, or a combination of all of the above.
With zero prep time it’s going to sound amazing. Outputs from your audio interface or CDJs are sent to a dedicated Envelop computer running Envelop for Live. We input your Left and Right channel stereo mix and upmix it for spatial playback.
